Museum of Memories

What is the museum of memories?

The Museum of Memories will be part museum exhibit, part theatre.

Drawing on ideas rooted in advertising, it lifts the everyday object to a position of spectacle, creating an 'Object Romance' - individual object histories that hint towards a broader story.

It is a play without actors where only objects are left to suggest a story. A soundscape will attempt to anchor or perhaps subvert meaning.

Where will the objects come from?

They will be found and then currated to form a story.

I like the idea that the project could evolve to become more spontaneous, that people could annonymously leave objects somewhere and that these could then be used to create multiple museums of memory coexisting in different cities. I need to work out how this would work but I think it could.

What will the soundscape be?

I imagine this to be a combination of 5.1 surround sound mixed with smaller sounds hidden amongst the objects. Essentially it will be an audio collage. Perhaps, hearing every sound will give you the true story behind the objects, missing out on a sound could mean that you come away with a different idea of what the story is. Actually, this could extend to the objects as well, perhaps the museum exhibit could be built in such a way that it is difficult to see every object unless you really hunt for them. I like the idea that different people could come out of the museum having had different experiences.

Who/What is this Project Influenced by?

Advertising, Brand Romances, 'The Ready Made', The Canadian Poet Anne Carson, And the artist Janet Cardiff - particularly her audio projects.

Look at Me - Cine Poem

I worked on the Cine-poem 'Look at Me' with New York based Art Director Lullu Brandt.

The project had its roots in fashion and beauty advertising, contemplating visions of female sexuality and male gaze.

You can see it here: http://lullubrandt.com/video/

Performance - Small White Man

I collaborated on a performance project with Danish musician Mikkel Hess and Artist 'Fos'.

The project 'Small White Man' explored ideas of communication and control within an improvised music performance.

'Small White Man' was performed live at Gallery spaces in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Copenhagen.

Sound of the City / Orchestra of the City

Mapping the city with audio.

Sounds of the City Website

Elevating everyday sounds (perhaps passing cars, the voice of the subway driver), placing them alongside bigger sounds (Church choirs, thunderstorms).

The project begins as a website - you can click on various locations around the city and hear sounds. Footsteps on 22nd street, the choir in a Cathedral on 116th. I like the idea that in recording audio you could pick up snatches of stories - perhaps in recording footsteps on 22nd street you record the fragment of a couple arguing from an open window, or laughter spilling out from inside a cafe.

Orchestra of the City Installation

A giant map on the wall of a gallery. 5.1 Surround sound. People are able to interact with the map - turning audio on and off, creating a symphony of the city.
